Dear Friend, Florida’s economic recovery is tied in part to holding BP accountable for the devastating effects of the oil disaster on our state. Last month, I filed the Gulf of Mexico Economic and Environmental Restoration Act, which directs the bulk of the fines and penalties to be paid by BP to the economic and environmental recovery of the Gulf Coast. The Tampa Tribune yesterday urged Senator Nelson and Senator-Elect Rubio to sign on: "Castor's bill would help pay for the efforts of the Gulf Coast states affected by the spill – Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana – to rebrand the region. The message is simple: The beaches are beautiful, the water clean and the food safe... Under the bill, the states would develop their own recovery plans and could expect to divide 80 percent of the $5 billion to $20 billion federal experts predict BP will pay out." - Tampa Tribune Editorial Watch the video announcement below In addition, our dogged persistence paid off last week when the White House announced plans to back off a proposal to expand oil drilling in the Gulf waters off Florida. President Obama announced that no new drilling would be allowed in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, obviously learning lessons from the BP oil disaster. With your help, you can count on me to continue to fight to ensure oil stays far from our shores, the jobs outlook improves and BP is held accountable for the Deepwater Horizon disaster. |
