County seniors can learn computer basics on new computers and monitors thanks to a generous donation from the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (NAAAA) and an award-winning volunteer.
Mr. Walter Turner has graciously given his time and effort for eight years to the Hillsborough County Department of Aging Services, Westshore Senior Center, where he trains seniors on how to use computers. His efforts were rewarded last May by the NAAAA in receiving the Older Volunteers Enrich American Award, which came with the donation of the new equipment.
Mr. Walter Turner has volunteered to teach classes to seniors about the computer basics, such as turning the computer on, sending e-mail, and finding lots of information via the Web in a safe and fun environment.
This four-week course will help seniors to learn Microsoft Word, which includes a word processor, spreadsheet, database, and graphic program.
There are many reasons why seniors should take computer classes. Here are a few ways computer training can help seniors:
Emailing makes it easier for seniors to communicate regularly and frequently with family members and friends.
Emailing can also help with socialization and promote independence.
Many seniors who have an illness like arthritis are unable to do some of the things they used to. Many assistive devices can make a computer easier to use. For example, instead of using a normal hand-held mouse, you can use a touch-pad, which allows you to move the mouse by sliding your finger over a small electronic pad.
Using a computer can help stimulate cognitive functioning, fine motor skills, and hand-eye coordination.
If seniors are interested in learning how to use a computer for recreational or educational purposes, classes at the Westshore Senior Center start the first of each month on Thursday beginning April 2 at 9
-11 a.m. and 1 - 3 p.m. To register in advance, call the Westshore Senior Center at (813) 554-5156.
